With the fifth and final season of “Big Love” coming to a close (there are only three episodes left, to be exact), fans of HBO’s off-kilter — and ground-breaking — polygamy drama are gearing up to say goodbye to Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) and his entire brood. And while viewers must part ways with the extended Henrickson clan, it seems some of the cast plans to stay something of a family, even after the show has gone off the air.
When MTV News caught up with Amanda Seyfried, who played defiant daughter Sarah Henrickson on the Emmy-nominated series for four seasons, she told us letting go of the show wasn’t too tough for her.
“I already dealt with the goodbyes. I’m cool,” said Seyfried, who is promoting her latest film, the fairy-tale adaptation “Red Riding Hood.” Turns out, the 25-year-old star was already close, in proximity or otherwise, with some of the show’s cast and crew.
“I live right next door to Jeanne Tripplehorn and very close to Ginny [Ginnifer] Goodwin. My best friend, who’s the producer of the show, lives down the street,” Seyfried said, adding, “My brother on the show [Douglas Smith] is like my brother in real life. [They] are already incorporated into my life, so I’m not that sad.”
Still, Seyfried — who noted, “It’s gonna suck because we’re not going to be on that set that we’ve been on for seven years playing a family” — acknowledged the rest of the cast (which includes Golden Globe-winner Chloé Sevigny) had a tougher time letting go.
“They were more sad because they also did the last season, whereas I only did one scene,” said Seyfried, who returned to the “Big Love” set while filming “Red Riding Hood.”
While bidding adieu to the series will be a blow to its loyal viewers, Seyfried promises that at least there’s a satisfying ending in store. She emphasized that the series finale, set to air March 20, “is crazy.” When we asked if fans will be pleased with the way everything wraps up, she put it succinctly with a smile, “Yes! I mean, if they’re not, then … tough!”
With Amanda Seyfried hitting it big on the big-screen with roles in Mamma Mia!, Dear John, Letters to Juliet and the upcoming Red Riding Hood, and Aaron Paul raking in awards for his high-profile leading role on AMC’s Breaking Bad, the young actors have had little time left for HBO’s Big Love, which married off their characters, Sarah and Scott, and sent them packing for Portland near the end of last season.
But look for both fan faves to pop up in this upcoming series finale that was completed in mid-December and will air in March. “Both Amanda and Paul really wanted to be a part of the last episode, even though they were both shooting movies,” says co-creator Will Scheffer, with partner Mark Olsen adding, “It was special. Literally and figuratively it was a family getting back together.”
It’ll be great to see Sarah back on our screens!
The L.A. Times has a second interview with Amanda where she discusses her return to “Big Love” and a gorgeous new portrait outtake. Enjoy!
Amanda Seyfried, who exited “Big Love” earlier this year after the show’s fourth season, says she’ll likely make return appearances to the hit HBO series.
“I’m gonna go back, probably at the end of the year,” the actress said during a recent interview, where she was promoting her new film, “Letters to Juliet.”
Seyfried, who on “Big” plays a teenager trying to understand her family’s polygamy, said she left the show because she wanted to pursue film opportunities.
“The commitment [of ‘Big Love’] would have kept me from doing anything this summer, and that’s just not fulfilling enough,” she said. “People were throwing opportunities my way, and I was like, ‘Oh, sorry, I can’t.’ But I was talking to Bill [Paxton] the other day, and he was like, ‘You’re coming back, right?’ And I was like, ‘Absolutely, if I’m not busy working on something crazy, of course I would.’ ”
And what does she have to say about her former cast mate Chloë Sevigny, who notoriously called the show’s fourth season “awful” and “very telenovela”?
Finally, here are screen captures of Amanda’s exit episode on “Big Love.” Enjoy! These will be replaced with DVD quality versions once the DVD is released. I will also hopefully be adding the previous seasons soon.
