“Did it excite you?” That’s 23-year-old Amanda Seyfried, taking a break from lunch—tonno salad served at a café in Italy, where she’s on location filming with Vanessa Redgrave—to talk about a less highbrow project: her new teenage-vampire movie, Jennifer’s Body. Specifically, she wants to know what I thought of the moment when she and her co-star, Megan Fox, kiss. You probably know the scene: Teasers for it comprise the film’s entire marketing strategy. “There may be one trailer where it’s literally two full minutes of us making out,” says Seyfried. (Attention, producers: Why have we not seen this yet?) “A lot of people in the world want to make out with Megan Fox, and she’s good. She has a lot of lips. We both have a lot of lips. It was very feminine.” Noted. We should point out, however, that it’s not as though the Pennsylvania native needed a lesbian kiss to juice her career. After years of superb but little-noticed performances in projects like HBO’s Big Love—Seyfried does more with an aecting pout than most actresses can do with a ream of dialogue—Mamma Mia! took her face global. (Yes, that was her singing live at the Oscars.) Still, getting it on with Fox, gratuitous as it was, turned out to be good preparation for Seyfried’s next project, Chloe, in which she plays an escort who seduces both Liam Neeson and Julianne Moore. “I had to make out with Julianne,” Seyfried says. “I was like, ‘I’ve already done this! This should be easy!’
“Jennifer’s Body” ranked at number five for this weekened’s box office. Here is what Box Office Mojo had to say about the numbers:
The biggest bust of the weekend was Jennifer’s Body, which mustered a skimpy $6.9 million at 2,702 sites. That’s relatively worse than Sorority Row last weekend, given its super-saturation level of hype and marketing. Most similar movies that disappointed in the past had greater attendance on their opening weekends, including Cursed, The Rage: Carrie 2 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. As those pictures and many others have shown, horror comedy is a tough sell at the box office, giving Jennifer’s Body an uphill battle to find a theatrical audience from its inception.
Jennifer’s Body’s advertising campaign exacerbated the situation by pinning its hopes almost entirely on Megan Fox, an actress who was a small cog in the Transformers machine, at the expense of story or more relatable elements. Ads could have appealed more to females, who have been known to drive horror business, through the picture’s Mean Girls themes or the character played by Amanda Seyfried, who was minimized. What’s more, if Megan Fox is such a fantasy for males, how attractive is it to them to see her as a man-eating demon? Besides, they can get their fix from pictures on the Internet. According to distributor 20th Century Fox, 70 percent of the audience was under 25 years old and 51 percent was female.
